Does Milk Really Contains Stress Relieving Hormone?

Apparently, one Japanese company does think so and they took it to the next level by coming up with a super-premium milk for the stressed-out adults.

Tokyo-based Nakazawa Foods have named this super-premium milk of theirs the “Adult Milk” with a target market of adults who live in a stressful society. The magic behind this “super-premium milk” is its high amount of stress-relieving hormone called melatonin which can be found in it.

Having a high level of curiosity, I decided to do a little research on the term melatonin (hey, I do my homework as well huh!) and found out that most living creatures(that includes you and me) do produced these type of hormone and it’s suppose to trigger the body’s sleep response.

If you’re wondering how all these relates to stress relieve, here’s the lowdown. When we are under stress, we tend to produce less of this hormone. If we produce less of this hormone, there’s a high change of insomnia which will led to insufficient sleep. We all know what are the sort of things that can happen if we don’t get enough sleep and that’s where the supplements of melatonin comes into place.

It’s suppose to help our bodies know when it’s time to go to sleep and when it’s time to wake up, something like a re-regulation of the system clock. No wonder there’s a saying that says you’ll sleep easily if you drink a glass of warm milk before going to bed. That’s quite a bit of science lesson yeah?

Back to the “super premium milk”, it’s call a premium milk because they contain three to four times as much melatonin as usual milk and they’re collected at a special time slot. The milk is taken from cows once a week at the break of dawn as they discharge a lot of a stress-relieving hormone called melatonin during the night, the company said.

Not all types of melatonin are good as I’ve a really interesting finding here where the source says that if melatonin comes from animal tissue, this grade of melatonin may be accompanied by viruses or proteins that could cause an antibody response and they highly recommend that people stay away from it.

Considering that the milk are bottled within six hours of milking at a farm north of Tokyo, I highly doubt that there will be any processing done and that does leave a lot to be desired huh?

Well, premium stuff certainly don’t come cheap and a bottle of this milk cost a whopping 5000 Yen /$44 USD/ $65 SGD. Holy Cow Moo, the price is easily 30 times of what I’m getting for my bottle of milk and it would make a lot more sense to simply  purchase a bottle of melatonin supplement as it can bought at a price of just $12 USD.

Bottom Line: If you really need a dosage of melatonin, consult a doc and get the supplements instead. It’s cheaper and safer.
